There is something rotten in the state of Government. That something is the people to whom the Government ministers. They (especially in a democracy) need to be cosied up to, to be pussy-footed around and, if possible, shafted without their having the least suspicion. This latter is usually done by means of some great and elaborate con or other. Think of the education system, where children are routinely told to sit down, shut up, and train to be good little factory operatives — or if we go to recent history, think of Pearl Harbor, which some say was a clever way of swinging the American electorate of the time behind the Governmental imperative of joining the second world war (although how they got the Japanese to effectively commit Hara-Kiri is anyone’s guess). Global warming is surely one of the greatest cons ever perpetrated. Yes, the world is warming up but — and this is the crucial point — the temperature has always fluctuated. Eight thousand years ago or so — the world was warmer than it is today. Much warmer. In Roman times they were growing grapes up by Hadrian’s Wall, that great boarder between the Northumbrian English and the fearsome Pictish Celts. The twelfth century, too, saw great heat waves. We know all this from historical record — from first hand accounts, but also from supporting evidence and data that cannot be mistaken. If Governmental hypotheses are to be believed, there must have been some really foul and anti-social motor vehicles around then — but if you go to any museum, you will find not a trace of any such vehicle. And yet, from these same primary sources, we also know there has been a great cooling too. Many times soothsayers warned of another impending ice age: the last of these trumps of doom came in the 70s, when scientists predicted we would all freeze in our ovens, or some such. Indeed, if you consider that the hottest period of the last century was actually immediately before the second world war, you begin to wonder. Surely, then, it is not global warming you should lose sleep over — any more than you should worry about tooth-fairies, hob-goblins or the cookie-monster. What you should worry about and, if at all possible, attempt to change, is the stuck record of the many Governments around the world who see Global Warming as the golden excuse to syphon off as much of your money as they can get away with. Don’t let it happen to you. And, er, don’t have nightmares!
